Architectural Space
Michelangelo Antonioni’s interest in architecture can be observed by how well the space is constructed in his films and locations play a primary role in shot. Architecture as mise-en-scène, it suggests the partition between spaces , the distance between bodies.
His 1962 film L’eclisse is a great example of how architectural space is constructed and how it establishes people and their relationship to spaces.
“Cinema is , or should be, the art of space. Even though a film exists only if that space is able to become time. But the basic work is Space. As Stéphane Mallarmé said ‘Nothing will take place, but the place.’”
